What about the national survey picture?

Survey-based evidence

In England and Wales, 40.9% of adults reported experiencing or witnessing antisocial behaviour locally in the year ending March 2026.

This is a survey of experience, not police incident counts. It is national context, not a Chichester estimate or a rate to place in the local comparison chart. There is no single directly comparable UK-wide street-crime series in this dataset.

National survey and scope

Crime Survey for England and Wales; adults aged 16 and over in households. Published 2026-07-23. Different nations use different systems. Official source tables · UK Facts national crime evidence

Local safety work

The city-centre order targets alcohol-related antisocial behaviour. Community wardens offer support and referrals; they have no enforcement powers.

Show the crime workings

Same 24 months and categories for all areas. Records deduplicated by id, assigned by point-in-polygon. No nearest-boundary reassignment. Anti-social behaviour and British Transport Police excluded from crime totals. Coordinates are approximate published locations; unmapped offences absent. A police neighbourhood is not a Census ward. Rates use the latest population estimate, not visitors or commuters. Street-level data are police management information, not a survey or complete official recorded-crime series. Local authority boundaries are the stored generalised 2013 geography; selected authority codes are unchanged. Do not compare these rates directly with national survey rates.

Extracted 2026-10-16. The generalised council boundaries date from 2013; boundary-edge records can move under newer or more precise boundaries. Police neighbourhood boundaries were retrieved with this release and applied to both years.

Which types of crime make the difference?

Each category has its own history and definition. Antisocial behaviour is counted as incidents outside the crime total.

Violence and sexual offences

Any offence where someone is hurt, threatened, harassed or sexually assaulted. It runs from a push in a pub to murder, so the headline number is dominated by less serious violence and harassment.

Until April 2013 police.uk called this "Violent crime". The series here joins the two. Forces recorded crime much more thoroughly after the 2014 national inspection of crime recording, and new offences (such as coercive control, stalking and harassment) were brought into the count. Both pushed recorded violence up without any matching rise in the Crime Survey.

Anti-social behaviour

Behaviour that causes harassment, alarm or distress but usually is not a crime on its own. These are incidents, not crimes, so they are counted separately from "total crime".

Only ASB reported to the police. Forces changed how they record ASB at different times, so a comparison between forces is weaker here than for crimes.

Drugs

Having, selling or growing illegal drugs. Most drug offences are found by the police, for example in stop and search, rather than reported by victims.

The count mostly reflects how hard police look (stop and search, operations), so a rise can mean more enforcement rather than more drugs.

A charge is not a conviction. Outcomes can change. Differences in offence mix, evidence and reporting affect these shares; they do not establish how well a police force performs on their own.

Archive methods, missing data and downloads

Existing UK Facts archive, August 2011–July 2026. Local authority assignment uses archive LSOA lookup; do not splice with the newer point-in-polygon neighbourhood extract. Annual rates use the average monthly population. England benchmark uses only covered population and is not a complete national total. No missing month is treated as zero.

Rates use each year’s population estimate, with 2025 estimates for 2026. Missing force-months remain missing. The England reporting-area benchmark excludes areas without data, including Greater Manchester after June 2019; changes in coverage can change the benchmark.

Changes in recording and category definitions also affect long-run comparisons. No value before a category existed is invented.
